88 DISCUSSION ON OVERHAUL REPAIR 0)' AND Discussion The Chairman, in proposing a vote of thanks to theAuthor, said that those responsible for the maintenance of dock gates realized that that was not just another branch of engineering but was, in many ways, a science of its own-especially in viewof the costs involved. As an example, the contract figure for a pair of gates built in 1945 had been f38,759, and the cost of the site-work f15,761, making a total of f54,520. A current contract, let within the past few months, for a pair `of gates of similar size, showed a big difference...

KIGG OS REPAIRS TO DOCK WALLS: [Selected (Paper No. 3618.) `(Repairs t o Dock Walls." By FREDERICK RIGG, JAMES Assoc. M. Inst. C.E. THE Humber dock a t Hull, which wasopened in 1809, was built with its walls battered on the face to a uniform radius of 66 feet, the sheet-piling at the toe being about 8 feet in front of the coping. This profile was no doubt well suited to vessels of a century ago, but modern steamers, almost rectangular in midship-section and fitted with fenders and rolling-chocks, chafed the face of the wall to such an extent thata general overhaul was decided upon...

The Constitution itself requires overhaul in the light of changing Commonwealth conditions, and of the encouragement that hasbeen given by Joint Oversea Groups in the setting up of new national engineering societies. A committee to examine this was set up under the Chairmanship of Sir George McNaughton. TheInstitution of Chemical Engineers and theInstitution of Engineers (Federation of Malaya) wereelected to membershipof the Conference. The Mr W...

C.E. &I. hFORAfATION relating dredging to olwrations and appliancus is for rarely complete, many items essential the purposes of comparison being omitted, while statements as to costs are often misleading. Clearly the true cost of dredging cannot be arrived a t by dividing t h e working-costs for a month or two by the output, as general 1 overhauls, interest on capital, sinking-fund charges, and idle time must all receive consideration...
