~roceedinge.1 DISCUSSION ON PORTSMOUTH DOCKYARD EXTENSION. 207 Discussion. Mr. E. A. BERNAPS that the works at Chatham, with which Bernays. said MY. he had been long connect,ed, had so much i n common with those described in the Papers that it was natural that he should feel great interest in them. It was a matter of peculiar interest that the secondary engineering had been so fully illustrated. I n most cases when an engineer had once designed his work he was compelled t`o drop all further charge of it and leave it in the hands of the contractor, who might or might not be a skilful man-who might or might not have been skilfully advised, as the contractor had been in the case under consideration...

B r i s t o w . t'hePaper was its brevity, and it wouldbe interesting to know what circumstances the were which, according to Authors, the precluded a fuller description of these works from being given. The Authors stated that the Paper was presented mainly with a view to evoke criticism of the main features of the design and works, but it was not possible to offer much criticism on the basis of the meagre particulars given...

SMITH, MSc, DIC, MICE* This Paper concerns the design and performance of a block on raked piles, supporting a diesel generator, whch replaced a raft that had failed through differential settlement. The investigation and the various remedial actions considered are discussed. The design the of replacement block is described, and the dynamic characteristics forecast by the calculations made in 1971 are compared with the characteristics measured after the satisfactory operation for 15 of the 20-40 year design life originally suggested...

Z Caisson is a seismically designed concrete dock gate constructed and installed at Rosyth Royal Dockyard in 1995 in support of the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine refit programme. The first such structure in the UK, it received the British Construction Industry Award for small projects in 1996 in recognition of its design and construction. The caisson is a gravity structure which rests on a prepared gravel bed at the dock entrance and seals against the dock jambs via a proprietary rubber ‘lip seal’. It therefore applies negligible loading to the dock structure, which would otherwise have required strengthening for the seismic case.
