- 152 CLEVEDON PIER. Mr. J. W. GROVER observed in respect of the head of the Clevedon pier, that considering its horizontal dimensions, 50 feet by 40 feet, it might seem extraordinary that a structure of this kind should have been built on so small a ground-plan. It was not the original intention to have constructed so small a head; b u t it was consequent on the want of funds to do more. The height, 70 feet, was out of proportion to the width ; and in consequence, the head at low tide, from the sea, appeared little more than a tower, and as such, had to be strongly braced, to resist the great force of the impinging tide...

- TREATMENT OF TOWN SEWAGE. 395 Dr. H. LETHEBY expressed his disappointment at the manner i n which the subject of the Paper had been treated. If he had been told that this was to be an abstract of the Report of the Royal Commissioners on the Pollution of Rivers he should perhaps have been prepared to have considered it in detail. With regard to the chemistry which the Author had brought bear upon the subject to he would say at once that it was not merely novel in style and nomenclature, but it was also very inexact in its conclusions; for it was derived from processes of analysis which were not generally accepted by chemists...
