He should have written, of course, " published and ascertainable experimental data," because the whole point of Professor Gibson's Paper was not that siphons could not bedesigned by the aid of published data, but that the flow was so complex that it appeared to follow no known hydraulic law, so that the necessary data could not be ascertained and therefore it was necessary to fall back on the principle of dynamical similarity, usually referred to as Froude's law...

- 512 OBITUAFtY. WILLIAM PRANCIS TYE was born a t Haysville, Ontario, on the 5th March, 1861, and was educated at Ottawa College and the School of Practical Science, Toronto, 1878-1881. In 1882 he entered the service of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He wasengaged until 1885 as rodman, transitman, and Assistant Engineer on the construction of the main line from Winnipeg to British Columbia, and in 1886 and 1887 on the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway-Montana Extension. In 1887 and 1889 he was in Mexico, at fist as Track and Bridge Engineer on the Mexican Central Railway and afterwards engaged as a mining engineer...
