The first volume of the Institution's Proceedings was published in 1837. Entitled the Minutes of Proceedings, these contained not only papers but also Institution matters such as annual reports, announcements and membership grade transfers as well as abstracts of papers published in other contemporary journals.

- Discussion. Mr. WHITEHEAD exhibited several lantern-slides, including Fe. 9, Mr Wbitahead. . which illustrated the latest development of the Birmingham sludgedigestion plant. Although 2,400,000 units of electricity had been generated in 1930, no heat was yet being passed from the gas-engines into the digestion tanks. The diagram showed how the waste heat from the gas-engines might best be utilized. Speaking approximately, a gas-engine converted one-third of the heat of the gas into power, leaving two-thirds in the cooling-water and in the exhaust gases...

- P r o ~ e C k P . 1 AND EXTENSION OF THE BREBRWATER. 235 Correspondence. DONRUBENDAVILA remarked that he had read the Paper with Don Davila. much interest. He agreed with the conclusions arrived a t by the Authors with regard to Antofagasta, except conclusion (c). He thought that in that the contours of the sea-bottom in proximity case to the breakwater and for a distance of 200 to 300 metres from it had a preponderating effect on the form of the wave. The friction of the water on the sea-floor would change the form and thesize of the wave-crest, and would influence the way in which the latter attacked the breakwater itself ; so that even if the breakwater were constructed on a curve, as proposed inthe Paper, it might be attackedand breached in one or two definite places if the contours of the sea bed tended to produce a concentration of the wave-crest in those places...
