The first volume of the Institution's Proceedings was published in 1837. Entitled the Minutes of Proceedings, these contained not only papers but also Institution matters such as annual reports, announcements and membership grade transfers as well as abstracts of papers published in other contemporary journals.

- OBITUAEY. 315 OBITUARY. E E N R Y NORLANDE RUTTAN, c.i\I.c., son of Bir. H. J. Ruttan, was bornonthe 21stMay, 1848, a t Cobourg, Ontario,Canada. After bcing educated locally, he was appointedin 1867 tothe Company. In the cnginccring staff of theGrandTrunkRailway following year he became assistant on the engineering staff of the Intercolonia' Railway Company, and later was employed as resident engineer on construction works. I n 1874 he was engaged on preliminary surveys on the north shore of Lake Superior, for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and during the period 1875-1877 he was responsible for the survey of 400 miles, and location of 200 milcs, of that railway east of Yellowhead Pass, Rocky Xountains...
