Discussion. Mr. M. G. J. McHaffie observed that, in view of the approaching publication of the Code of Practice for Site Investigation, to which the Author had referred, the Paper was very ?pportune and it should receive a cordial welcome, because it would have the effect of focusing attention on the work which it was sought to expound in that Code. Boring to explore strata in which important engineering works had to be built had been common practice for many years, but the results were not always interpreted correctly...

MAONEL ON APPLICATIONS OF 161 PR,E-STRESSED CONCRETE IN BELGIUM. Applications of Pre-stressed Concrete in Belgium. By PROFESSGOURS TAVEM AQNEL, Member of the Royal Belgian Academy. IN this Lecture, I assume that my hearers know the principles of prestressed concrete, and I simply intend to show the particularities of the Belgian method of making pre-stressed elements. This method refers only to what is sometimes called " post-stressing," although I prefer to call it pre-stressing, the prefix " pre " having the meaning " placed under compression previous to superloads acting on the structure...

By TERENCEP ATRICOE' Su~mmP, h.D., B.Sc.,A .M.I.C.E. INTRODUCTION. FOR designs carried out in accordance with current Codes of Practice the optimum arrangement of steel reinforcement in concrete sectionds oes not appear to the Author to have received proper consideration. More particularly in the case of compression members eccentrically loaded, he considers that prevalent methods of design are quite unnecessarily extravagant...
