20 MANZOM ON WINTER CONDITIONS AiVD THE railway and G.P.O. overheadroutes were completely wrecked in the southern half of England from the Severn to theWash. GLAZED FROST. This occurs when rain falls and freezes on the ground and on all other exposed objects. It is liable to block railways by breaking branches off trees, andisparticularlysevere on telephoneandtelegraph wires and poles. Fortunately, widespread glazed frost ie rare, but when it does occur it gives very extensive work to the Signal and Telegraph Engineer, and it may take him months to get his communications normal again...

This statement is followed by forecasts for different districts. The advantage of having the chart and the general statement can scarcely be overestimated. They give the reader a general picture of the weather over the country, and a framework on which to hang the details of the district forecasts. In the Author's opinion, there is a wide publio which appreciated the value of the general picture of the weather formerly provided, and which would welcome the restoration of the former custom...

(Ordered by the Couracil to be published in abstract form.) t In an earlier Paper 1 the Author analysed the specific features of the temporary expansion joint which was introduced between the old and new masonry when the Aswan dam was first heightened, in 1908-1912. The principle of the device was due to the late Sir Benjamin Baker, PastPresident ; its intended objective was to protect the old dam against dangerous over-stressing which might have been caused by the cooling, contraction, and initial settlement of the additional masonry had the new and old works been firmly bonded together...

BUTTRESSES OF THE ASWAN DAM. 87 for it supplies evidence of general laws controlling the deformation of large masses of masonry and concrete. It follows from these observations that, despite all that had been said and written on the irregularities and imperfections in the texture of masonry and concrete, as against the hypothetical ideal properties of the imaginary solid contemplated by the theory of stresses, a certain relationship exists, nevertheless, between the dimensional characteristics of the irregularities in question and the size of the structural unit for which they cease to be significant...
