366 APPLEYARD AND CURRY ON OPENCAST CONCLUSION. The outstanding fact revealed by this work is the unexpectedly large quantity of coal proved, capable of extraction by opencast methods. The coal won so far has been mainly confined to thethicker non-banded seams, since it is from these alone that the necessary quick production of clean coal could be obtained ; it is alreadyclear that equally great,if not greater, resources exist in the thinner and the dirt-banded seams in Great Britain. The early history of the development of opencast coal mining would not be complete without reference to the valuable assistance rendered by the Canadian Army Authorities, who, when asked to do so, readily agreed to thetransfer of the whole of their diamond drilling Training Unit to the South Wales coalfield...

426 OBITUARY. OBITUARY. ALFRED HERBERT DORLENCOURT MARKWICK was born a t Brighton on the 26th July, 1904, and died a t Datchet, Bucks, on the 5th March, 1946. He was educated at the Brighton, Hove and Sussex Grammar School and a t Manchester University, where he obtained the degree of B.Sc. with first class honours. He received his practical engineering training with Messrs. C. S. Allott and Sons, of Manchester, and in 1927 was appointed as an assistant engineer to the Yorkshire Electric Power Company, Leeds, on the construction of the Ferrybridge power-station...
