412 CORRESPONDENCE ON THE DESIGN OF LAND AIRPORTS FOR as sound. That method was essentially one of " hitand miss " and begged the question of indeterminacy by making sufficient assumptions to reduce the problem to one of plain statics. Because the assumptions were really a confession of ignorance, it was necessary to make different assumptions on a " trial anderror " basis in order to assess the consequences of an error in any one assumption. They agreed that with such a method it had t o be admitted that there was some danger of a rather excessive overall factor of safety, and the only remedy against that was the experience and judgement of the designer...

That seemed to lead straight to the provision of the minimum which was necessary for safety without incurring expenditure and producing difficulties for which there was no valid reason. The figure of 94 per cent. for the usability of one NE-SW runway direction in the London area with a maximumcross-wind factor of 15 miles per hour seemed a little high. Similar calculations which the Author had made gave only 88 per cent...

430 CORRESPONDENCE ON THE UINTENANCE OF PLANT The work done in compressing elastically the top surface of a slab of concrete subject to uniform bending moment would be of the same order of magnitude. It was clear that, with the simply supported slabs which the Author had described, the work done elastically on the concrete and the steel would be considerably less than those small amounts of 75 lb.-inches and 0.3 lb.-inches respectively, so that it was a fair deduction that the work done elastically was negligible. Although Mr...

If approved, the test sheet should then be signed, and only then should permission be granted to dispatch the machine t o site work. CORRESPONDENCE ON DREDGING MACHINERY. 467 The interchangeabilityof bucket-dredger parts raised all the difficulties of standardization and it would be necessary for makers to agree and for such standards tobe used in allnew dredgers. Mr. Mitchell's argument for the gear drive did not seem to cover the need for elasticity in the mechanism, which the belt provided. His remarks aboutthe behaviour of sandinbuckets accorded with theAuthor's experience and suggested that if much of that had to be dredged a special form of bucket was required. The Author agreed that comparison of dredger builders, contractors, and harbour authorities was odious, but there were cases of complacency, which were not the less objectionable for being very British...

SWAY IN COMPLICATED RIGID FRAMES. 479 operation, but involved the application of anarbitrary displacement followed bythe determination of the force required t,o produce the displacement. The second point was that the Author's method did, in fact, give a picture of the way in which the frame was functioning, since it depended on the idea of combining the results of different types of distortion. It was easy to visualize the forces needed to produce those distortions without actually working out their numerical value. Indeed the extra steps involved in such evaluation might well cloud the picture...

Mr. Harold Wallhouse observed that it was a truism that, ability t o measure was the first essential towards exact knowledge and, whilst the system of soil classification outlined by the Author in a Pape,r which concentrated much intensive investigation into a small compass could not be classed :M exact measurement, the principles formulated should provide a sound foundation forthe accretion of fundamental knowledge on the roadmaking characteristics of the soils in Tanganyika in particular and East Africa in general...
