OBITUARY. 311 OBITUARY. Sir GEORGE WILLIAM WMPHREYS, K.B.E., was born in London on the 7th December, 1863, and died in London on the 9th March, 1945. He was educated a t Mill Hill School and King's College, London, and served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Griffiths and Hulett, under whom he was engaged on the construction of the Bodmin branch of the Great Western Railway. I n 1885 he became engineering assistant to the late Mr. Woodman Hill on the construction of fortifications and harbour works a t Shoeburyness, Sheerness, Harwich, Greenock, Portland, and elsewhere...
