Discussion. The Author, in introducing the Paper, apologized for the fact that the Paper contained so littlethat was really engineering, but essentially engineering in rural water-supplies did not differ materially from engineering in any other branch of water-supply, and he had therefore referred only to those few points in which there were differences in degree...

SPllRKES BND CORNFIELD O N THE RUCKL`INC, OF THE WEBS Oli PLATE GIRDERS. 59 Paper No. 5358. `` The Buckling of the Webs of Plate Girders." By STANLEY ROBERT SPARKES, M.Sc., and GEORGE MAXWELL CORNFIELD,M.Sc., Assoc. MM. Inst. C.E. (Ordered by the Council to be published in abstract form.)? WHENdesigning plate girders to specified flexural and shear stresses there is an infinite choice for the sizes of the webs and flanges. The lightest girders are usually those having the greatest web-depth, but as the depth is increased so the web becomes more and more slender for a given area and the flanges become smaller, until a condition is reached where either the flange or the web becomes unstable under load, and thegirder fails by distorting sideways...
