In proposing the vote of thanks to Professor Inglis, Sir Jonathan said he could only allude to the interest aroused in all by the admirable and interesting way in which the Lecture had been presented and the exciting experiments by which he had made his audience think that they had acquired a thorough understanding the subject, so that theirminds were of vibrating inharmony with his ! JOURNAL OF THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS. OCTOBER 1944 : SUPPLEMENT CORRESPONDENCE ON A PAPER PUBLISHED IN XOVEMBER 1943 JOURNAL. Paper No. 5347. The Use of Pre-cast Pre-stressed Concrete Beams i Bridge Deck n Construction.' 't By ALAN ANDREW PAUL, B.Sc., Assoc. M. Inst. C.E. Correspondence. Dr. P. W. Abeles observed that apparently the beams described by the Author were designed as " fully " pre-stressed constructions, inwhich the stretching force applied to the reinforcement was of such a magnitude that, under working load, only compressive stresses occurred in the concrete-even if the greatest possible losses of the initial pre-stress, owing to elastic deformation, shrinkage, and creep, had taken place...

CORRESPONDENCE ON THE TREATMENT OF WATER BY OZONE. 383 , The Author had also found that dairies, breweries, and mineral water manufacturers preferred t o use ozonized water, and that seemed highly significant. Water engincers had preferred to use figures of power-consumption on the energy/water basis because their immediate concern was .the cost of treatment per 1,000 gallons of water. The Author agreed that the energy/ ozone basis was the only true method where comparisons were required between efficiencies of the various methods of ozone-production. By the energy/water method, however, the waterbeing treated a t any one installation could be roughly classified in much the same manner as by the use of the oxygen-absorbed figures in chemical analyses...

398 - CORRESPONDENCE ON THE PLASTIC THEORIES FOR THE ULTIMATE STRENGTH OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS. rate either short concrete columns or cubes, the modular ratio value for Beam 2 being 12. Furthermore the Author felt that it was more difficult to determine the initialtangentmodulus of elasticity than the secant modulus.Thestress-strainrelations for concrete were notquite linear for small stresses, and the type of graph obtained would depend upon the sensitiveness of the extensometer. That difficulty was somewhat similar to that of determining the elastic limit of a sample of steel. It was well known that the elastic limit of steel-a term which had been discarded in the appropriate British StandardSpecifications-gradually decreased with the use of more sensitive extensometers, making it impossible to determine a value in accordance with the usual definition of the term...

There could be no doubt that the engineer was fa.ced at that point with a complexity of difficulties, both in regard to curvature and gradients, and what had resulted should, in the Author's view,be accepted as the best lay-out that could be arranged in all the circumstances. Theaverage spacing of stations, their positions, andthedistances between themwas governed so much by the nature the busy points to of be served and their nearness to one another, that it was very difficult to recommendany specified spacing...
