36 DISCUSSION ON MAINTENANCE O F Discussion The Authors introduced the Paper with the aid of lantern slides. Mr J. H. Siddons said that while the Scapa Flow causeways were under his charge, from the end of 1945 until early in 1947, there were only a few minor slips of the pell-mell blocks, which occurred a t different parts on the east side of No. 2 causeway-that was the side most exposed to storms. Those slips had been easily remedied afterthe storms occurred, and fortunately the storms themselves had not been of very long duration, so that it had been possible to take the necessary remedial measures by bringing along some 5-ton concrete blocks and dropping them over $he side, using the 10-ton crawler cranes kept on the site for the purpose...
