34 DISCUSSION ON PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE APPLIED TO THE Discussion The Author introduced the Paper with the aid of a series of lantern slides. Mr Conrad Gribble said that comparative safety margins, which were dealt with inPart I1 of the Paper,were a matter of prime importance in pointof time if not of quality, becausethe bridges to be renewedhad to be decided upon beforethe method of renewal. The Author's remarks, which were mainly connected with design, must have a direct bearingon the estimation of the strength of existing bridges. TheAuthorhadmentioned that the BridgeStressCommittee,lwhen making their Report in1928, had not dealt with the question of stress but merely confined themselves to finding out what loads engines were likely to put on bridges...
