The normal glazed-stoneware pipe is not an ideal collecting drain, since water enters only at the joints, which have t o be carefully made so that only the bottom of the spigot is bedded, leaving the top part of the joint open. If it were possible to design a drainage system consisting o f a pipe surrounded by filter medium, porous pipes might be used, allowing percolation over their full length and facilitating speedy jointing...
