56 LEE ON FULL-SCALE EXPERIMENTS IN ROAD RESEARCH The value of the full-scale experiment has been amply demonstrated in the investigations of surface-dressing problems, where it has played a predominant role. The problem of the design of bituminous surfacings isone that still requires much further investigation by full-scale experiments. The experiments described have shown that there aredifficulties in obtaining on main roads durable non-skid surfacings with open-textured carpets made with some types of aggregate. If correlation could be established between road performanceand theresults of laboratory examination of road-stones, a great advancewould be made towardsdeciding the best type of surfacing material for any particular stone...
