18 DISCUSSION ON behaviour, and the introduction of more accurate methods of determining the stresses to which it is subjected. As a result, the allowable stresses for steel have been increased by more than 50 per cent. since the beginning of the present century. Little more need be said to indicate the dependence of economy on research and knowledge.
