THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS. CORRESPONDENCE ON PAPERS SUBMITTED FOR DISCUSSION AT MEETINGS OF T H E . ENGINEERING DIVISIONS :DURING SESSION 1948-49. ROAD ENGINEERING DIVISION. Road Paper No. 27. c` The Co-ordination of Horizontal and Vertical Alignment of High-speed Roads." f BY WILFRIDHARDY SPENCER, A.M.I.C.E. Correspondence. Mr.P.E.Haines observed that the Papergave very valuable information regarding the aesthetic design of road works. Whilst most road engiueers agreed on the necessity of co-ordinatingverticalcurves, the present-day practice of locating roads having long curves of large radius, with the reduction or omission of straight sections, meant that very long verticalcurves werealso necessary...

AND VERTICAL ALIGNMEKT OF HIGH-SPEED ROADS. 7 study of the later road alignments, and that line of approach was undoubtedly helpful. In the Author's opinion, the difficulty represented in Pig. 13 ( a )by Mr. Jonker was due to the plotting of a single axis only and should disappear when the width of the road band was plotted and the perspective opened out to embrace the eye-point. In that type of picture it was not essential to place the masking place on the crossing of the eyeline and the roadline, since the purpose of that mask was to control the size of picture in the foreground...

CORRESPONDENCE ON A RECLAMATION NEAR WAINFLEET, LINCOLNSHIRE. 17 MARITIME AND WATERWAYS ENGINEERING DIVISION. Maritime and Waterways Paper No. 12. `` A Reclamation near Wainfleet, Lincolnshire." t By GILBER'r ELLIOT ERNEST BUCRNER, A.M.I.C.E. Correspondence. Mr. P. C. Dewhurst observed that he felt that certainstatements in the " introduction " spoiIt what was otherwise avery satisfactory factual account of a boldly conceived and executed example of reclamation for agriculture. The Author had attributed the erection of the first banks for protection against the sea to the Romans ; but that had no foundation in early documents or otherearly sources, being merely an ascription-on the principle that no organization in Britain other than the Romans would have been capable of carrying out such large works-by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century antiquaries such as Dugdale...

18 CORRESPONDENCE ON 1851 as about 1,000 acres, but it was not known whether those acreages were measured in summer or in winter. A considerable area of bog surrounded the Mere and was recorded as constantly flooded in winter, the waters covering an area believed to be 2 miles square. The drainage tax upon 3,000 acres would seem to indicate the area liable to inundation. WORKS CONSTRUCTION DIVISION. Works Construction Paper No. 13. 20 CORRESPONDENCE ON to " decant " the workmen from the " Gowring " locks after rapid decompression to atmospheric conditions, passing them quickly into horizontal auxiliary chambers of the type mentioned by Mr. Taylor. After recompression in those chambers the men would be slowly decompressed with carefully the rate of pressurereduction, temperatures, andventilation controlled. Three of those auxiliary air-locks would be provided together with a fourth one fitted out as a hospital air-lock for medical cases. The regulation referredto would require twice the amount of available compressed air given in the Author's rule and a decompression time at maximum pressure of 93 minutes...
