CONSTRUCTION OF THE JAN SMUTS AIRPORT, JOHANNESBURG. 29 Discussion. Mr. J. V. Cook, who introduced the Paper in the absence of the Authors, said that he had visited the site in September 1946, when the work was in its very early stages. The Authors had explained, in the Paper, that the importance of the Jan Smuts airfield lay in the fact that would serve as the main terminal it for the trunk route services to the Union of South Africa. There were two main routes from Europe SouthAfrica, namely, the Eastern" all red," or to rather `` all-pink," route through Egypt, the Sudan, and Kenya, and the trans-Sahara West Coast route, which made use of staging posts in British, Prench, and Belgian territory...
