A research activity was recently started at the University of Napoli Federico II on the unusual application of permeation grouting to low-permeability soils and rocks. The project is aimed at finding a means for remedying some of the geotechnical hazards that involve the subsoil of Napoli, mostly made in its upper part of collapsible, unsaturated pyroclastic silty sands (pozzolana). This paper refers to the results obtained by treating pozzolana with sodium silicate solutions of water and a small percentage of silicates and of an inorganic additive. The results clearly indicate that the very diluted silicate grouts adopted are effective in this case, improving the mechanical properties of pozzolana not only from a physical point of view, by building up a polymeric net within the voids, but also by direct chemical interaction between the grout and the soil grains. The mechanical properties of grouted pozzolana depend on curing time, grout content and surrounding moisture conditions.

Une activité de recherche vient d´être lancée à l´Université Federico II de Naples; elle porte sur l´application inhabituelle de la cimentation infiltrante dans des sols et rochers à basse perméabilité. Ce projet a pour but de trouver comment remédier à quelques-uns des risques géotechniques que connaît le sous-sol de Naples, principalement dans sa partie supérieure de sables limoneux pyroclastiques non saturés (pozzolana). Cet exposé montre les résultats obtenus en traitant le pozzolana par des solutions d´eau contenant un petit pourcentage de silicates et un additif inorganique. Les résultats indiquent clairement que les ciments au silicate très dilués qui ont été adoptés sont efficaces dans ce cas, améliorant les propriétés mécaniques du pozzolana non seulement sur le plan physique, en créant un filet polymérique à l´intérieur des vides, mais aussi par une interaction chimique directe entre le ciment et les grains de sol. Les propriétés mécaniques du pozzolana cimenté dépendent du temps de cuisson, du contenu de ciment et des conditions humides ambiantes.

This paper presents a detailed field study of a soft clayey silt stratum improved in situ with preloading combined with prefabricated vertical band drains (PVDs). The clayey silt stratum was to support a warehouse in a chemical plant. As the bearing capacity of the soil was much lower than the load it was to support, the subsoil condition was improved by installing PVDs in combination with preloading. Thus the rate of consolidation of the clay stratum was increased. The band drains were installed up to a depth of 14·2 m at a spacing of 1·6 m. The intensity of preloading applied was 52 kPa. For preloading, the surcharge fill was placed up to a height of 3·10 m from the natural ground level. The area of both preloading and band drains was 15% greater than that of the floor of the warehouse for more effective improvement of the ground. Preloading was done for 60 days. Settlements were monitored using settlement gauges. The settlements observed across the entire area indicated that the preloading operation was uniform all through. The amount of settlement was large up to the point of filling the surcharge, but thereafter it did not show a significant increase.

Cet exposé présente l'étude de terrain détaillée d'une strate tendre de limon argileux améliorée par précharge et drains en bande préfabriqués verticaux (PVDs). La strate de limon argileux devait porter un entrepzô t dans une usine chimique. Comme la capacité porteuse du sol était bien plus basse que la charge qu'elle devait recevoir, la condition du sous-sol a été améliorée en installant des PVD avec la précharge. Ainsi le taux de consolidation de la strate argileuse a augmenté. Des drains en bande ont été installés jusqu'à une profondeur de 14,2 m avec un espacement de 1,6 m. L'intensité de la précharge appliquée était de 52 kPa. Pour la précharge, un remplissage de surcharge a été placé jusqu'à une hauteur de 3,10 m à partir du niveau du sol naturel. Pour avoir une amélioration plus efficace du sol, la surface de la zone de précharge et de drains é tait de 15% plus é tendue que celle du sol de l'entrepô t. La précharge a été appliquée pendant 60 jours. Les affaissements ont été contrôlés en utilisant des jauges de tassement. Les tassements observés à travers toute la zone ont indiqué que l'opération de précharge était uniforme. Le volume de tassement é tait important jusqu'au point de remplissage mais après, il n'a montré aucune augmentation significative.

A 6 m high reinforced embankment constructed on deep-mixing improved soft Bangkok clay is presented. The jet mixing method with cement slurry employing a jet pressure of 20 MPa was utilised in the installation of deep mixing piles. Surface settlements and lateral movements were monitored during and after construction. The deep mixing improvement has effectively reduced the settlement by as much as 70%. The differential settlement between pile and soil ranged from 8 to 20% of the average settlement. Moreover, the back analysis confirmed the laboratory investigation that the soil–cement pile installed by jet mixing can have a higher after-curing void ratio and, consequently, higher permeability and coefficient of consolidation. Finally, the higher permeability ratios, K _v,p/K _v,c, of 30 and 40 were confirmed from numerical and analytical back analyses, respectively.

Une berge renforcée de 6 m de hauteur, construite sur une argile tendre de Bangkok améliorée par mixage profond fait l'objet de cette étude. Nous avons utilisé la méthode de mixage par injection de ciment liquide, sous une pression de 20 MPa, dans l'installation de piles à mixage profond. Les affaissements de surface et les mouvements latéraux ont été suivis pendant et après la construction. L'amélioration par mixage profond a effectivement réduit de 70% l'affaissement. L'affaissement différentiel entre pile et sol représente 8 à 20% de l'affaissement moyen. De plus, la rétro-analyse a confirmé l'étude en laboratoire montrant que la pile sol-ciment installée par mixage à injection peut avoir un taux de pore plus élevé après cuisson et, en conséquence, une perméabilité et un coefficient de consolidation plus élevés. Enfin, des taux plus élevés de perméabilité, K _v;p/K _v;c, de 30 et 40, ont été confirmés par les rétro analyses numériques et analytiques respectivement.

Micropiles are defined as small-diameter, drilled and grouted piles. They are used in groups for underpinning existing structures and as a foundation support for new structures. They can also be used in networks as a technology of ground improvement. In this case, both vertical and inclined micropiles are utilised to create a geocomposite material with both high stiffness and resistance. This paper aims at analysing the performances of a micropile network implemented in a wall configuration. The first part of the paper describes the numerical model used for the analysis of this network, and the second and third parts analyse the performance of the micropile network under lateral and vertical loads. Analysis shows that the inclination of micropiles results in an improvement of both the tiffness and the bearing capacity of the micropile network.

Les micropiles sont définies comme étant des piles de petit diamètre, forées et cimentées. Elles sont utilizées par groupes pour soutenir les structures existantes et comme support de fondation pour les nouvelles structures. Elles peuvent aussi être utilizées en réseau, comme technologie d'amélioration des sols. Dans ce cas, des micropiles verticales et inclinées sont utilizeées pour créer un matériau géocomposite ayant aà la fois une forte rigidité et une haute résistance. Cet exposé a pour but d'analyser les erformances d'un réseau de micropiles implanté dans une configuration de mur. La première partie décrit le modèle numérique utilizé pour l'analyse de ce réseau; les seconde et troisième parties analysent la performance du réseau de micropile sous charges verticales et latérales. L'analyse montre que l'inclinaison des micropiles donne une amé lioration de la rigidité et de la résistance mais aussi de la capacité porteuse du réseau de piles.
