The first volume of the Institution's Proceedings was published in 1837. Entitled the Minutes of Proceedings, these contained not only papers but also Institution matters such as annual reports, announcements and membership grade transfers as well as abstracts of papers published in other contemporary journals.

The Authors stated that the Paper was presented mainly with a view to evoke criticism of the main features of the design and works, but it was not possible to offer much criticism on the basis of the meagre particulars given...
