The complex and varied regional ground structure within the UK often poses a challenge to the construction industry. Settlement is an issue on many projects, particularly in areas with alluvial deposits and on land that has weak underlying subsoils. For many engineers, expanded polystyrene is providing an alternative to traditional fill materials, reducing vertical and horizontal stresses in the underlying soil structure and leading to more stable foundations
