Discussion Mr E. B. Hugh-Jma observed that the application of welding to highway work had brought about very considerable reductions in the amount of steel used; but plainly, to obtain those economies without attendant drawbacks meant giving new attention to items in design which had not had to be considered before, such as the balancing of the amount of the welding and even the order in which it was carried out so as to minimize distortion. He gathered that faults in distortion were fairly easy to detect, but there were other problems, such $8 the quality of the steel itself and the soundness of the weld when completed, which seemed to require further tests ; more research was required on that matter...
